L'histoire de la mycothérapie, au sens large, remonte à plus de 4000 ans. On sait en effet que le fameux «Otzi» utilisait déjà des polypores de bouleau comme laxatif et vermifuge contre ses parasites intestinaux ainsi que l'amadouvier, pour arrêter les saignements en cas de blessure et comme allume-feu. Du côté de la médecine traditionnelle européenne (MTE), les moines bénédictins recouraient par exemple aux connaissances sur les processus d'extraction, le dosage et les heures de prise des champignons médicinaux. Ils connaissaient leurs propriétés antibiotiques et leurs effets spécifiques pour optimiser le système immunitaire. Ils savaient que les composants cellulaires et moléculaires des champignons, obtenus par extraction, pouvaient améliorer la qualité de vie des humains. Ce savoir s'est largement perdu durant la période de l'industrialisation et avec l'essor de la médecine académique en Europe.
Les champignons vitaux sont des produits naturels. Certains facteurs doivent être respectés pour assurer une utilisation thérapeutique responsable. La qualité du produit à base de champignons est un facteur essentiel. La culture, la cueillette et la transformation de ces produits constituent une science en soi de même qu'un travail d'artisanat spécialisé. Les critères de qualité sont : l'utilisation exclusive de champignons bien mûrs is possible, la pureté de la poudre ou de l'extrait (pas d'ajout de substances étrangères ou de remplissage ni de substrat), des contrôles clairs des polluants, des expositions aux rayonnements et des micro-organismes (moisissures, bactéries, etc.) par des laboratoires indépendants et des indications fiables sur la teneur en polysaccharides spécifiques aux champignons. Si ces conditions sont remplies, les préparations de champignons vitaux peuvent alors déployer tous leurs effets bénéfiques à la santé.
Fondamentalement, on peut classer les composants des champignons en deux catégories :
a) Les composants physiologiques nutritionnels
b) Les composants pharmacologiques
Jusqu'à présent, presque toutes les études scientifiques ont été réalisées avec des extraits de champignons dont les polysaccharides spécifiques hydrosolubles (biodisponibles) ont été séparés de la structure de chitine indigeste lors de la fabrication avant d'être concentrés. Ainsi, la quantité de polysaccharides biodisponibles augmente d'environ 3% dans les poudres et même de 40% suivant les extraits. Les extraits sont toujours des mélanges de nombreuses substances, pas des isolats, et contiennent donc une large palette de composants disponibles.
Les champignons vitaux ont un large spectre d'application, couvrant notamment une bonne partie des maladies dites de civilisation. Leurs applications s'étendent de l'utilisation préventive à long terme (poudre ou préparations combinées d'extrait et de poudre) jusqu'au traitement complémentaire des maladies chroniques et des tumeurs (extrait pur sous forme solide ou liquide).
Les champignons vitaux n'ont pratiquement pas de contre-indications ou d'effets secondaires connus, pour autant qu'il n'y ait pas d'intolérance aux champignons ou au fructose. Les champignons vitaux sont déjà supportés par les jeunes enfants pour autant que le dosage corresponde à leur âge. Ils peuvent être pris sans problème par les femmes enceintes et celles qui allaitent à l'exception des quelques champignons vitaux qui ont un puissant effet détoxinant, comme le reishi.
En médecine naturelle, les champignons vitaux s'utilisent seuls ou en combinaison avec d'autres pour soutenir la santé Ils ont entre eux des effets synergiques, renforçant mutuellement leurs effets. Si un champignon vital suffit dans bien des cas, les combinaisons associent généralement deux champignons vitaux, cinq au maximum. Certains champignons vitaux ont des effets similaires, comme d'abaisser directement ou indirectement le taux de cholestérol (Pleurotus, Shiitake, Maitake, Cordyceps, Coprinus) et d'inhiber les inflammations (surtout Reishi, Shiitake, Cordyceps, Coriolus). C'est généralement sur les bases des symptômes secondaires que l'on décide d'utiliser plutôt tel ou tel champignon vital ou telle ou telle combinaison.
